.co.uk, .uk or .com: which domain should you choose?
A quick, practical guide to picking the right domain ending for your website.
Your domain ending (the bit after the dot) is one of the first decisions you'll make. Here's how to choose without overthinking it.
Mostly serving UK customers? Go .co.uk
A .co.uk is instantly recognised and trusted in the UK. It tells visitors you're UK-based, which matters for local services, trades and UK-only shops.
.uk: shorter, but less familiar
Plain .uk is shorter and modern, but some people still instinctively type .co.uk. If you go for .uk, it's worth owning the matching .co.uk too.
Selling or speaking to the world? .com
.com is the most recognised ending worldwide. If you sell internationally, or your name is available as a .com, it's a safe choice.
Other endings worth knowing
- .org: charities, clubs and community groups.
- .shop / .store: makes it obvious you sell things.
- .online / .site: often available when other endings are taken.
Our advice
- Pick the ending that matches where your customers are.
- Keep the name short and easy to say out loud.
- If both .co.uk and .com are free and affordable, consider owning both.
